Groundwater is an important source of drinking water stored in the earth beneath our feet, in spaces between sand, soils, and fractured rock known as an aquifer. Layers of aquifers make up a groundwater basin. The groundwater basin boundaries have been defined by the U.S. Geological Survey and the Nevada Division of Water Resources. These boundaries, provided by the Western Regional Water Commission, for Washoe County are slightly modified for local water planning and management purposes.
